Asteroid Image Checker: Help Us Measure How Fast Asteroids Rotate

“Asteroids are small space rocks that can tell us a lot about how our solar system formed and changed over time. One important way scientists study asteroids is by measuring how fast they spin. This is called their rotational period.

“For example, the rotation period of our planet Earth is about 24 hours, a period we know as a day. By measuring an asteroid’s rotation rate, we can learn more about its shape, surface, and even what it’s made of.

“In this [Citizen Science] project, we need your help to examine images of asteroids taken by telescopes. Your task is to find images where the data might be unclear or incorrect, which helps us precisely determine how fast these asteroids spin.

“Some asteroids spin extremely fast—imagine that a day on these strange worlds lasts only a few minutes or even seconds. This rapid spinning affects how they move through space. One reason for this is the Yarkovsky effect, a small but important force caused by sunlight. You can learn more about it in the research section of this project.

“By joining this project, you’ll help us uncover the secrets of these unusual asteroids and contribute to real scientific discoveries.” ~Zooniverse

“Asteroids spinning in just seconds or minutes challenge our understanding—their rapid rotations should tear apart the fragile structures needed to explain their unusual behavior.” ~Words from the Researcher

PROFILE: Isaac Arthur

We’ve referenced Anton Petrov and Isaac Arthur several times on our show.

Jeff Found Isaac Arthur’s videos years before finding Anton’s videos. While Anton, creates short videos about science news, Isaac Creates much longer videos that deal with the science around concepts from science fiction and other speculation about space. So, we will present the profiles in the order in which we found the two presenters who are each great in their own way.

We will talk about how a guy with an everyday background became the president of the National Space Society, science educator and Youtuber.

What About More Esoteric Higher Planes?

What About More Esoteric Higher Planes?

This is another speculative episode.

Last month, we did an episode about aliens and were asked by a couple of the members of our audience about being from higher planes. Pam and Jeff had different takes on the question of higher dimensions.

Last week we talked about higher dimensions from a mathematical angle. This week we will look at it from a much more esoteric perspective. This will be pure speculation with audience participation through the comments.

Do not expect actual science in this episode, just speculation and conjecture. Come and see our dive off the deep end.

Dimensions in Time and Space

Dimensions in Time and Space

Last month (8/29/25) we got a suggestion for a show, so we will delve into ‘Dimensions’ this week!

We consider dimensions in various terms…
A dot
A line
A cube

And we give them names…
First dimension
Second dimension
Third dimension

From a search: “In everyday language, dimensions are the length, width, and depth (or height) of an object.”

It continues: “In mathematics, a dimension is a coordinate or degree of freedom required to define a point on an object.”

That’s not the direction of THIS episode however.

What happens when we go beyond the ‘third dimension’?

There are some fun videos and thought experiments out there. This episode, we’ll take a look at some of these and play around with dimensions!

CRUNCHY TOPIC: The Elliptical Galaxy

There are three major types of galaxies. There are Elliptical, spiral and irregular galaxies.

We covered spiral galaxies in a previous episode on May 9. 2025 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDmdX9xRyGQ&t=2912s. In this episode, we will cover Elliptical Galaxies, the remnants of collisions between the spiral and barred spiral galaxies that most people think of when they think of galaxies.

Learn about these galactic remnants and how they relate to our Milky Way.

Vera C. Rubin Observatory

“The Rubin Observatory houses the Simonyi Survey Telescope, a wide-field reflecting telescope with an 8.4-meter primary mirror. The telescope uses a variant of three-mirror anastigmat, which allows the telescope to deliver sharp images over a 3.5-degree-diameter field of view. Images are recorded by a 3.2-gigapixel charge-coupled device imaging (CCD) camera, the largest camera yet constructed.” ~Wikipedia

Basic Science 29% Don't Get - A Night of Trivia

Inspired by a member of our audience, we are trying out a ‘Trivia Night’ type episode of the Show.

Some 28-29% of the adults in the USA fail basic science questions like how long does it take for the Earth to orbit the Sun?

Let’s work on fixing that with some episodes where we delve into various questions involving space exploration, science and astronomy. This is the world we are venturing into, we want to be as well informed as possible!
