CRUNCHY TOPIC: Expanding Universe

A new study shows that the universe’s expansion may not be accelerating. For the past several years, scientists have seen that, using the light from Cepheid variables (what are called: standard candles), the universe appears to be expanding. They have then added a bunch of fiddly bits to physics to explain why the expansion is accelerating.

A new study shows that the “Standard Candle” may not be so standard. It shows that their luminosity varies but varies predictably. So, they are still useful. We just have to learn how to adjust the measurements they give us.

As with all science, the variability hasn’t been “proven” and we can’t yet know that their luminosity is variable (and of it varies as this study claims) but, if true, it allows us to take a weed whacker to all the bits they had to stick onto the expanding universe to explain the acceleration. It also gives me the chance, in the future, to be able to say: “I told you so.”

PROFILE: Margaret W. Rossiter

Margaret W. Rossiter didn’t just study history—she transformed it.

In 1993, she revealed a hidden truth: the Matilda Effect — the systematic erasure of women’s scientific achievements. She named it for suffragist and abolitionist Matilda Joslyn Gage, who had warned the world more than a century earlier.

Rossiter spent decades sifting through archives, letters, and forgotten works, uncovering women who labored without pay, recognition, or even the right to claim their discoveries. Her three-volume Women Scientists in America is more than research — it is reclamation.

Every biography she restored was a quiet revolution, returning women to the center of science where they always belonged. She showed exclusion was never personal failure, but a barrier woven into science itself.

Her work sparked programs ensuring today’s women in STEM receive credit, publication, and remembrance. Honors like the Sarton Medal, a MacArthur Fellowship, and a Guggenheim recognized her, yet the Rossiter History of Women in Science Prize best embodies her mission.

Through decades of dedication, Margaret Rossiter didn’t just restore names. She made sure the world could never claim ignorance again.

Asteroid Image Checker: Help Us Measure How Fast Asteroids Rotate

“Asteroids are small space rocks that can tell us a lot about how our solar system formed and changed over time. One important way scientists study asteroids is by measuring how fast they spin. This is called their rotational period.

“For example, the rotation period of our planet Earth is about 24 hours, a period we know as a day. By measuring an asteroid’s rotation rate, we can learn more about its shape, surface, and even what it’s made of.

“In this [Citizen Science] project, we need your help to examine images of asteroids taken by telescopes. Your task is to find images where the data might be unclear or incorrect, which helps us precisely determine how fast these asteroids spin.

“Some asteroids spin extremely fast—imagine that a day on these strange worlds lasts only a few minutes or even seconds. This rapid spinning affects how they move through space. One reason for this is the Yarkovsky effect, a small but important force caused by sunlight. You can learn more about it in the research section of this project.

“By joining this project, you’ll help us uncover the secrets of these unusual asteroids and contribute to real scientific discoveries.” ~Zooniverse

Dimensions in Time and Space

Last month (8/29/25) we got a suggestion for a show, so we will delve into ‘Dimensions’ this week!

We consider dimensions in various terms…
A dot
A line
A cube

And we give them names…
First dimension
Second dimension
Third dimension

From a search: “In everyday language, dimensions are the length, width, and depth (or height) of an object.”

It continues: “In mathematics, a dimension is a coordinate or degree of freedom required to define a point on an object.”

That’s not the direction of THIS episode however.

What happens when we go beyond the ‘third dimension’?

There are some fun videos and thought experiments out there. This episode, we’ll take a look at some of these and play around with dimensions!
