This is the Checklist Demo of the checklist I use to prepare for observing for a ‘star party’ type venue.
Please use this as an example only! It is constantly evolving and highly specialized for my needs as a Star Party host and the exact inventory of equipment I can pull from right now. Things change continually and some of these I may only use once in awhile – there are many variables. You should customize one for yourself.
The most important thing is to have a complete list to work from.
If I don’t bring something, I put an X in the box on the left and if I do bring something, I give it a check mark. I may circle things or highlight them as I take a break or need them to stand out for some reason before I’m on the road with everything in the car.
If you have one, bring a red flashlight on Tuesday evenings. I have a couple, if you don’t have one, I can loan you one.
I’m watching the Clear Sky Chart closest to the observing site in the Park here…

There are many of these Charts in North America, so look for them if you go out observing elsewhere on this continent. The more blue boxes in a column, the better!
If we get rained out some night, we’ll take a deeper look at this for one of our classroom sessions. Believe me, there is plenty to learn indoors as well as out! Someone asked me just yesterday a question that I had not heard before and now I know what kind of nebula the Triffid Nebula is! It’s so cool to keep learning this stuff and there is always something to learn!
Please ask me if you have any questions about heading out to observe. I want this to be great for you!
