Recent meteor impacts and close asteroid flybys might give us the impression that it’s a good idea to watch the skies for incoming NEOs (near Earth objects).
Yet we are poised to lose a valuable resource in this vigil. The Southern skies of planet Earth are currently watched over by Siding Spring survey – a telescope program in Australia.
The Siding Spring facility is about to lose their funding.
Apparently, nothing will take its place until 2020.
The impact of this loss seems severe…
“Ezequiel Treister, an astronomer at the University of Concepcion, Chile, says: ‘Without an observatory in the Southern Hemisphere scanning for NEOs, we may miss around 40 per cent of asteroids that could collide with the Earth.'” ~SciDevNet
What can we do?
Creative solutions are needed to solve problems like this. How about our network of family & friends? Teamed up with social media. Seems like there is a way 7 billion people can find to help maintain this system, a tool to help us watch the night skies that may help us save lives if it’s possible.
What could happen if we don’t stay alert to the dangers?
NOTES:
*We could all help spread the word
*Not age specific or restricted
*Might cost us as individuals – not knowing might cost us more!

MY APOLOGIES I recently activated a ‘captcha’ plug-in. Each comment will now verify you are a visitor who wants to leave an actual comment. I saw hundreds of messages a day which had nothing to do with Everyday Spacer, or you. The task of sifting and sorting was keeping me from writing and from your real comments. Please reach out as you wish, I want to hear from you and be of service, as I am able. I would not use the ‘captcha’ program if I didn’t have to.
Just saw an ad on Facebook for this organization…

And learned that…
Our mission is to build, launch, and operate a space telescope to be placed in orbit around the Sun, to find and track threatening asteroids before they find us.
Then followed the URL to their page…

Sounds interesting. Need to learn more!
