Kickstarter: Space Pioneer – Review (Part 1)

This part looks at the game itself.  Part 2 will be about the kickstarter campaign.

I looked over the kickstarter for Space Pioneer.  It is a space game that claims to be a real time strategy game that uses real physics (except for FTL and the like).  They are working with a number of scientists to get the science right.

To me, it looks like Eve Online and Masters of Orion with better science and, one would assume, better graphics.  They want the game to be both educational and fun.  They also want to cater to different audiences.  There is a stand alone mode that appears to be very similar to Masters of Orion III and a multi-player Player vs Player (PvP)mode with up to 150 players in a sector.

PvP doesn’t much interest me but the stand alone mode looks fun.  It would be even better if the multi-player side also had a cooperative mode.  It is possible that it does but I was not able to see any indication in their writeup.

All in all, this looks like a game that I will enjoy playing.  I can’t really rate it based on the marketing hype but if it actually lives up to what they are saying, I’ll likely give it at least a 4 out of 5 when I get around to playing it.
